Phase III: Weight Loss Maintenance
A weight loss program loses relevance if it ONLY helps you lose weight. A more effective and meaningful weight loss control practice also helps you maintain your weight loss for years to come. Because overweight and obesity are chronic diseases, they can be managed successfully but not cured.
Here at Jumpstart Medicine, we recommend that patients continue on a monthly basis until they have been reassured that there is no weight regain and that they are comfortable in their new eating habits and lifestyle. During this phase, we may implement new strategies to maintain your weight loss while continuing to offer consultations, education, and counseling. These visits do include supplemental injections. Physician consultation is available as necessary.
Practically speaking, our goal for patients is 2 years of successful weight loss maintenance. We use this metric because studies have shown that a similar duration of sustained weight loss maintenance greatly increase a patient’s odds of permanent weight control.
We have a lifelong commitment to our patients’ health and success. We pursue an “open door policy” during maintenance wherein patients can be seen as needed for continued reassurance, further guidance, or relapse. A safety plan is put in place such that patients who stray 6 pounds upward from their achieved target weight can be reassessed at any time. In some cases, FDA-approved medication may be prescribed during maintenance if and when indicated. Rarely, referral to off-site bariatric psychologists for more intensive behavioral modification will be recommended. For those who meet criteria for surgery but fail medical management, referral to excellent bariatric surgeons is always an option.
